I am not a DIY person, and I’m especially not a DIY mom. So this craft must be really simple for me to be recommending it to you.
For a while, we’ve been saving the crayons that the kids get at restaurants. I hate wasting anything, so I always pocket them, know that they just throw them away. It didn’t take very long for a bag of mostly green, red and blue crayons to gather in our kitchen. You don’t need to be a restaurant hoarder like me to do this craft: just use the broken or worn down crayons that every house with anyone under the age of 5 inevitably has. Or, buy a new box if you want more colorful.
How to make your own multi color crayons:
- Soak crayon in water. Depending on the restaurant and brand, the paper either comes right off, or takes a bit of work. I thought this step would take the longest, but was pleasantly surprised how quickly I could do almost 50 crayons.
- Beak up the crayons and place them in silicon baking dishes. You will need silicon as there is not really any other way to get the crayons out once they have hardened. {see my selections below.}
- Place in the oven for 5ish minutes. Do NOT walk away! I repeat. DO NOT LEAVE the kitchen. It takes a surprisingly small amount of time. If you walk away like I did, the crayons won’t burn, but your house will smell like a crayon factory for a couple of days.
- Let harden. I did this for about an hour with one, and over night with the other batch {only because I forgot about them.} But this goes back to the silicon: otherwise they will be impossible to remove.
