You read about my experience with a “friend” recently, not making me feel awesome, and hopefully me inspiring you with this post to use technology and your phone to spread positivity. I found myself rereading it recently when I realized that some people like to use social media as a way to depict a “perfect” life, share all the great social experiences they have and maybe make others not feel as adequate by comparison.
Let’s me perfectly clear: I like to share what I do in my life, because 1. I get feedback from you that you like it, you comment, send me DMs or ask what I was wearing or send encouraging messages. 2. When I am in cool, instagram-able places, I tend to share them to IG stories, because I like to see when other people do the same. But I never NEVER want to make you feel inadequate, left out or that I am doing something cool, while you might not be.
So…personal stories like this one, I don’t really like to share since I know that the people involved read this blog. But after I have gotten such an overwhelming positive response recently to a “friend” bullying me, as seen in this post {more than one of you DM’d me saying my post make you cry!}, I want to share that I get hurt feelings too.
When I had Madrid, I was alway planning on going back to my job as a Registered Nurse at a hospital, so I had no plans to make friends. I thought that everything as a new mom would be easy: rainbows, butterflies, an adorable baby and lots of sleep. Well, I was wrong {but not about the baby}. I was overwhelmed, tired and felt oddly alone, even though I had a new little buddy, literally attached to me at all times. When I ran into a high school acquaintance at my favorite baby boutique, and embarrassingly peppered her with baby questions, I realized I might need some new mom friends of my own. So I did what anyone would do, I googled “How to make mom friends.” {If this doesn’t show you how truly awkward I am, I am not sure what will!}
To make a long story short, I found a way to meet moms through an app, that lead me to a mommy/baby yoga class that lead me to making mommy friends. I would do to the meet ups, when they fit into our nap schedule, which oddly enough was the biggest obstacle in my way of making mom friends. My babies didn’t nap on the go. Blame this on my husband having an amazing, but time consuming job, therefore after the first two months, I felt guilty making him get up in the night with me. Or blame it on me sleep training or being overwhelmed, or my baby being the priority over socializing, but what have you, my babies didn’t and don’t nap on the go.
I digress, anyway…. I made a group of mom friends. We all lived fairly close to each other, all had strict thoughts about breastfeeding, screen time and eating organic and just kind of gelled. We socialized together, our kids liked each other, our husbands were becoming buddies and we all had our second children around the same time. My mom meet most of, what I call “my mom friends,” they were a great support system and I left lucky.
Then that bullying situation happened.
Thanks to social media, I found out that I was no longer invited to play groups or moms’ night. While I might blame that situation, it is 100% okay that we grew apart. Recently, some life things happened that made it strictingly clear that, while these moms went through the fire with me of becoming a mom, we no longer lived all that close to each other, we began to go to different schools and our schedules didn’t align like they used to.
Yet, I found myself grumpy, when I saw on social media that “my mom friends” were having multiple playdates and social occasions without me, I felt excluded. I felt hurt. I felt left out.
So what did I do? I called a friend who gets me and she gave the very sound advice, that you can’t be invited to everything. My husband reminded me that me sticking up for myself in that bullying situation make me feel good, but might not have made the other person involved feel all that good to be around me. Whether my friendship with my mom group of friends, just shifted, changed, or both, whether I was purposefully being excluded or that that bully really thought that I think that I am better than everyone else, it didn’t feel good.
I have more things in my life than I can list that I am thankful for. If I did, I would literally never have an ounce of time to complain about a thing. Yet, I want to acknowledge that I was hurt. My feelings were hurt. Yes, I am old. Yes, I shouldn’t care. But I did. And that is ok. Friendship shift and change. And honestly, I wish I had more time for the close friends that encourage me and lift me up, support me and like me. So I was left out. Purposefully so. That. Is. Totally. Fine.
And so was I.
And you know what else was totally fine??? That it took me a minute to realize this. SO…super long round about way to share my sage advice: don’t forget for one second that social media is weird. It is strange. And oddly enough, people spend hours culitvating a “perfect” glimpse into their life that isn’t perfect nor real. I know that I am not the only one that has been left out or felt left out from what they have seen on social media. And I am not all about not posting group pictures on your feed {I did recently}, I’m just reminding you to not feel left out and also to remind you to not be exlusionary. Yes, you can’t invite everyone to everything. And yes, you won’t be able to make it to every invitation for social interaction. But don’t let social media let you second guess you being you. You standing up for you. You using your platform to share a snippet of you.
Basically, I just want to remind you {and myself} that social media isn’t real and to not give it too much power. Yes, I probably am being excluded on purpose. But do I care? Nope. Not anymore. Those pictures I saw on social media had nothing to do with me. And most feeds you see on Instagram having nothing to do with you. I take that back 99.999999% of what you see on social media has nothing to do with you and is all about the person posting it.
While I try to provide content that you interact with, ask for and seem to engage with, I try to post what will make other feels good or is fun to look at.
So remember to be nice. Be kind. Be you. Be real. And don’t be mean. Especially not on social media. And especially if you ever want to run for public office one day.
