I’m not really sure how I got hooked on this. Maybe it was to see if I was pushing myself or it could have been from an endurance peloton cycling class…or maybe from those 6-8 classes that I used to clock at OrangeTheory a week. Either way, since monitoring my heart rate on the Peloton, I feel like I get so much more out of the classes. When a resistance cadence combo is called out and it feels impossible, I can check my heart rate to see if this is a mental struggle, or indeed I’m truly pushing myself.
This has been covered on my IG stories a bunch of times, but I do get about 2-5 DMs a day on how to sync this up, so I wanted to do a step my step. If you have the Peloton Bike+, this should happen automatically with your Apple Watch and the bike. If it doesn’t automatically, check bluetooth on each.
How to Set Up Your Peloton to Track your Heart Rate with Your Apple Watch
1 – Get the HeartCast App
The app is very easy to find and actually pops right up after searching for Peloton. I don’t remember if it was free or not, but it will change the way you exercise, so even if it is a couple dollars, I still recommend it.
2 – Download to Watch and Phone
Make sure you download it to your watch and your phone. The bluetooth on the Peloton can not read from your watch alone. The device tracks from your watch, syncs with the phone and the Peloton connects to your phone.
3 – Turn On Watch First
Open the App on your watch first. About 5 minutes before I head to our home gym, I will open the app on my watch and make my watch band the tightest it will go. This increases the accuracy and decreases any issues.
Your watch might take a couple of minutes to read your heart rate, so don’t get frustrated. This is why I open up the app on my watch before I start working out.
4 – Pair with Phone
Once your watch is reading your heart rate, there is a green button on the bottom of your screen on your watch to sync with your phone. Open the app and you should have the same HR on each. You have completed 2/3 of the connections! Almost there!
5 – Set up Bluetooth on Peloton
You can do this when you click on a class {like the picture above, below and to the right of the red ‘Start’ button} or under “Settings” on the touchscreen of the bike or tread when you first turn it on.
Setting up the bluetooth is almost exactly the same way you set up your wireless ear speakers, so I know I’m doing a poor job of explaining this, but don’t get discouraged!
6 – Success!
Your touch screen on the Peloton should look like the one above when you are all connected and you’ve started a class.
Other Tips/ Things to Consider
- So far, I’ve had no problems with the Heart Rate monitor on the treadmill, so if you have a newer piece of equipment, it should be a smoother set up, if you have an older one, it might take a couple of tries.
- When I have had a problem, here is what I try, in order
- Turn off the bluetooth connection on the bike, sing the alphabet and turn it back on.
- Turn off all the apps on my phone and re try to connect.
- Turn off and on the bluetooth on my phone.
- Close all app on my watch. Re open, re try.
- Turn off and on blue tooth on my watch.
- And Final attempt when it is being a brat, turn off the bike and start over.
- One time I couldn’t figure it out and turned off the bike, watch and phone and everything worked when I turned it back on.
- You will need your phone handy when setting this up right before a workout/ be handy while working out. I keep mine in one of the cup holders. If this is your time to completely disconnect, turn your phone on silent and only have the HeartCast app open.
- PLEASE consult with a doctor if you have an health concerns or heart health history. I’m not a doctor, nor pretend to be one.
- This has helped me stay in a low heart rate on recovery days and really push it on heavier days. Also love this for HIIT or Tabata to try my best to lower my heart rates on the recoveries.
Tag me on social when you do this! I want to see you working out and checking your heart rate. Plus, as I alwasy say, I rather be a resource than make money off you. I don’t have a lot of knowledge on much, but this has changed my workouts, so I would love to be selfish and see how this blog post helps you too!
